Computer vision finds the figure, lays a mesh over it, rigs a skeleton underneath, and deforms the mesh to make it move. Brought to life without generative AI
DoodleMate doesn't invent anything. It never redraws the character, "cleans it up," or generates a new one. What comes alive is the child's actual drawing.
This is a principled stance. DoodleMate does not use generative AI to make or change a child's work. We believe a child's art is already whole exactly as it is, and our job is to bring it to life, not to redraw it.
How it actually works
DoodleMate uses computer-vision AI, the same family that lets a phone find a face in a photo, to read the drawing: where the character is, where its joints bend, and how to separate it from the page. Then it builds a little puppet out of the real artwork and moves that. It creates no new imagery.
A first look at AI
Because the AI here only observes and predicts, it's a gentle, age-appropriate introduction to how the technology really works (inputs and outputs, predictions, getting things wrong and fixing them), using something the child made with their own hands.

Trust & safety
Safe by default
We collect as little as possible. DoodleMate is built to gather the minimum it needs, with no student email required in the classroom version.
Ad-free, and we don't sell data. No ads, ever. Paid access is how we will keep the lights on, not selling anyone's information.
Student work is private by default. Kids' creations aren't public. Sharing is a deliberate choice of the teacher, and in classrooms students can't post publicly at all.
Uploads are checked. Every uploaded image runs through automated content moderation before it's used.

About
Made by two parents
DoodleMate comes from a husband-and-wife team raising their own kids. Jesse is a research scientist whose peer-reviewed, award-winning work in computer animation and human-computer interaction has appeared at the field's top venues.
Before DoodleMate, Jesse created Animated Drawings at Facebook AI Research (FAIR): the open-source project, used by millions of people around the world, that first showed a child's drawing could get up and move. After leaving Facebook, he rebuilt that idea independently, and without generative AI, as DoodleMate.
